3G USB Stick sold with Wrong information by Vodafone India ???

3g USB Stick Wrong information
I was sold Vodafone 3G USB dongle on Feb – 2011 for Rs 1500/- at vodafone vashi store. I was told that the unlimited usage
plan of Rs 599 will work on 2G as well as 3G network.
When I questioned that how I would get 3g speed at this much cost, I was again told that as you are existing customer.
when 3g broadband would be launched I would get the same speed on existing plan and I would not require to change plan.
Every time I use to call up I was told the same thing and now when I approached Vodafone customer care I found out that this plan is
applicable only on 2G network and the charges will be different for 3G network. I was shocked to know that I was fooled to believe
that I could use this plan for both 2G and 3G network.
I requested them to take back USB dongle and refund me the money. I was advised by Vodafone care executive to go to Vodafone Care Centre for refund.
When I approached Vodafone care centre they refused to take back. I again called Vodafone care and they said it can’t be returned. This is a case of
Misstatements of facts and incomplete information given to me and inducing me to buy the USB 3G dongle.
Again on 17’Th of April I went to Vodafone store Vashi and spoke with the manager over there. She said that as you are existing customer you would be
able to use 3g speed at plan of Rs 599. (Even she was under same impression. The same thing was told to me by Vodafone Chembur store)
Then just to confirm she called up somewhere and then said, sorry you will have to go for the new 3g plan.
I asked her why I was given wrong information; she said that even we were not aware of these things at that time (Feb 2011 to 17 April 2011)

The plans are given and you have not mentioned that these plans are for 2g network.
The same is printed on your 3g usb stick broachers.
I am really shocked after getting such false information from Vodafone. I am using Vodafone since last 8 years. We have 8 Vodafone
connections in my family. I never expected all these marketing strategies from Vodafone.

They also said Swami Sampoornanand, who is second in command, has taken charge of the agitation and has asked people to gather at Jantar Mantar. Banners were torn and mattresses and furniture lay all over the Ramlila Maidan that resembled a war zone after the police action.

The Ramlila ground was booked for 20 days by Baba Ramdev for yoga camp but was turned as the venue for his "Satyagraha" movement.

Organisers were asking people not to leave the pandal and continue the protest. Some of them, associated with Baba's movement, contacted their associates in respective states to protest against police action in the morning.

Large number of people were leaving the spot, some were seen arguing with the policemen that why they have taken such an action when their protest was peaceful.

Some of the supporters refused to leave the venue saying they will not move till they get a direction to do so from Baba.

Anna Hazare, the 71-year-old Gandhian has said the Janlokpal movement will support Baba Ramdev and his agitation as long as his credentials remain as strong as they are now.

His comments have come as many, including some who support Anna Hazare, have characterized the Baba as someone on the political right -- alongside the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (National Volunteer Brigade) or RSS. RSS is considered the 'guiding force' behind the opposition Bhartiya Janata Party or BJP. As a result, many believe that by aligning too closely with the Yogi, Anna Hazare risks losing his political impartiality.

However, Hazare said he did not think Baba Ramdev is associated with any political party. He reiterated that the top leadership of the movement will remain closed to those with overt political affiliations.

"Those who have been stamped with the identity of a political party or who are office-bearers of a political party will not be part of the [leadership] of the party," Hazare said.

Hazare and the broader India Against Corruption umbrella organization have been careful to keep BJP and other opposition leaders at a safe distance. The parties, on the other hand, are eager to partake of the movement's popularity with the middle-class -- arguably much higher than that of any mainstream political party.

Hazare was also asked whether he felt that Baba Ramdev was a suitable candidate to lead an agitation against black-money as the Yogi is the head of a large educational, training and religious organization with assets of more than Rs 1,000 crore.

"If it comes to our notice that some of this money is number 2 [unaccounted for], then we will rethink our support to him," Hazare said, "It is not fair to make unfounded allegations."

Baba Ramdev's campaign is seen as the launching pad for a new political party that will fight the 2014 general elections with the agenda of cleaning up the politics of the country and restoring 'self-respect' in India. Baba Ramdev expressed his reservations on whether the upcoming Lokpal should have the right to check if the PM was corrupt or not -- pointing out that it may distract the Prime Minister. The remark was seized upon by the Government to prove that the civil society leaders are not unified in their demands from the bill.

"Ramdev, who fancies the Prime Minister's position, has opposed including the PM's position within the ambit of the upcoming corruption ombudsman - Lokpal." Both the assertions made above are false. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Friday demanded that those involved in corruption cases and accused of stashing black money should be tried in fast-track courts and should get death sentence if found guilty. Calling people accused of corruption and of accumulating black money as traitors, Ramdev said that India can once again become a superpower if the Government tackles the problem on war footing.

"I admire the fact that thousands of people have joined the movement against corruption. People have come from over 2000 kms to join the movement against corruption and I thank them for their courage," he said while addressing a mammoth gathering at Delhi's Ram Lila Ground on Friday.
Ramdev has announced that he will launch his indefinite fast against corruption and to bring back black money stashed by Indians in foreign banks from June 4.

Seize properties of black money account holders: Ramdev ???

CHHINDWARA: Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev today demanded that the government should seize the properties of those people, who have stashed black money in banks abroad, and declare those as national assets.

 "I will not disclose the names of those persons who have stashed black money, as their number is not just in hundreds but in lakhs," Ramdev told reporters here after a yoga camp.

Referring to his discussions with the government on the issue, he said the government has agreed to bring back Rs 400 lakh crore black money stashed in foreign countries.

Ramdev claimed that nearly 5 lakh people would take part in the satyagraha that he is planning to undertake in New Delhi from June 4 to stress his demand that the black money deposited in foreign banks be brought back.
He said over 30 lakh people have already extended their support to his proposed satyagraha through SMS.
Demanding promotion of Hindi in the country, the spiritual guru said now the government has agreed to have Hindi medium in agriculture universities also.
"The country would actually develop when Hindi is made compulsory in medical colleges and other educational institutions," he said.
He also termed the year 2011 as a revolutionary year in terms of elimination of corruption in the country.

Who Pays 1 Crore-plus Salary for Worth Less Shit's in INDIA ?

New Delhi: Mukesh Ambani has got company of at least 29 fellow corporate executives, including four from his own group Reliance Industries , in terms of annual salaries running into crores of rupees for the latest fiscal.


These include JSW Energy's Sajjan Jindal, Hindustan Construction's Ajit Gulabchand, Raymond's Gautam Hari Singhania, ICICI Bank's Chanda Kochhar, Axis Bank's Shikha Sharma, as also Infosys' S Gopalakrishnan and S D Shibulal.

Companies are currently in the process of disclosing top management salaries for the financial year ended March 31, 2011 through their annual reports for the period.

Just about a month in the process since the annual reports of listed companies began trickling in late April, as many as 30 top corporate executives have been found to have received annual compensation exceeding 1 crore.

So far, the figures are available for a total of 32 companies, out of which executives at 13 companies received salaries in excess of Rs one crore mark in 2010-11, an analysis of information available with financial data aggregator Capitalline shows.

Besides RIL's Chairman and MD Mukesh Ambani, there are three more top executives from the company -- Nikhil Meswani, Hital Meswani, PMS Prasad and Pawan Kumar Kapil - in this elite league.

The list of executives with salaries exceeding Rs one crore includes a total of four executives from ICICI Bank, including its chief, and five from IT major Infosys, including TV Mohandas Pai and K Dinesh who recently left the company.

Also, there are three top executives from JSW Energy (N K Jain, Lalit Kumar Gupta and S S Rao) besides its chief. The Infosys executives include Srinath Batni, while those from ICICI Bank include K Ramkumar, N S Kannan and Rajiv Sabharwal.

The total list of executives with such salaries would grow further as more companies reveal their figures in the coming days.

For the previous fiscal 2009-10, there were more than 800 corporate honchos with a pay package of over Rs one crore.

For the latest fiscal ended March 31, 2011, the list is so far led by Mukesh Ambani with a pay package of Rs 15 crore -- which has remained unchanged for three years now.

As per the figures available so far, Ambani is followed by Nikhil Meswani (Rs 11.05 crore) and Hital Meswani (Rs 11.03 crore).

So far, no one other than these three RIL executives have been found to have got a salary in excess of Rs 10 crore.

However, Mukesh Ambani was not even in the top-10 in terms of salary in 2009-10, when Sun TV Network's Kalanithi Maran and Kavery Maran were top-earning executives with pay packages of Rs 37.08 crore each.

That year, Marans were followed by Hero Honda's Pawan Munjal (Rs 30.88 crore) and Brijmohan Lall Munjal (Rs 30.63 crore), Apollo Tyres' Onkar S Kanwar (Rs 29.69 crore), Cadilla Healthcare's Pankaj Patel (Rs 28.63 crore), Madras Cements' P R R Rajha (Rs 27.91 crore), Alps Industries' Sandeep Agarwal (Rs 23.56 crore), Bharti Airtel's Sunil Mittal (Rs 23.48 crore) and Torrent Power's Markand Bhatt (Rs 21.5 crore).

In fiscal ended March 31, 2010, as many as 459 companies gave a salary of over Rs one crore to their one or more executives, but salary figures are so far not available for the year 2010-11 for many of them.

Experts believe that the number could go higher for the year 2010-11, to mark a change from the trend seen till a few years ago when some corporates were shunning fat pay packages.

Among others, Mukesh Ambani had also announced a freeze on his pay package in October 2009, amid a debate over the need for moving away from huge CEO salaries to send a signal of solidarity to fight the global economic slowdown. 

Ambani was India's top-paid executive in 2007-08 with a package of over Rs 44 crore and could have remained to hold the top slot, if he had not decided to freeze his salary from 2008-09 onwards.

For the latest fiscal also, Ambani decided to forego Rs 23.75 crore from his annual compensation and kept his salary capped at Rs 15 crore for the third year in a row.



At the same time, the company's total remuneration for top management personnel, as also commission paid to non-executive directors, declined during fiscal 2010-11.

Ambani was eligible for an annual remuneration of Rs 38.75 crore in 2010-11 as Chairman and MD of RIL.

RIL has said that the decision to cap the salary was taken to reflect "his desire to continue to set a personal example for moderation in managerial compensation levels."

At a time when there was a raging debate on right-sizing of CEO salaries, RIL had announced in October 2009 that Mukesh Ambani would take a pay cut as a result of which his pay package dropped to Rs 15 crore for 2008-09 fiscal from over Rs 44 crore in 2007-08.

Days before Ambani's decision, then Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid advised the industry to shun "vulgar" salaries. Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia had also spoken against "indecent" compensation.

However, things have changed since then and the experts believe that the days of high CEO salaries could be returning to the corporate world.

Giving feedback to your boss: The right way ???

Bangalore: Employees generally feel that their boss' cabin is a scary territory and they prefer not to break into it. Giving feedback seems to be very simple, but it's never easy to put it into practice when it's to your manager. Giving feedback to your boss: The right way


It all depends on the relationship you share with your boss. The ability to make a positive impact on your boss with your inputs depends on the level of trust he has on you. You need to critically analyze, contemplate and foresee its aftereffects. You need to determine if your boss is open to your suggestions before you give them. It's better to refrain from doing so if you feel that your boss is not very receptive to feedbacks from his employees or if you share a cold relationship with your boss. However, if you have an open-minded, straightforward manager with whom you share a good rapport, you owe him good insights and inputs that should help him in his role.

The effect of your feedback largely depends on the timing regardless of it being a positive feedback or a negative criticism. You should bring it up to your boss as early as possible. Make sure you do not mix your emotions with them. Try not to get personal as emotions can affect judgment negatively. Take an objective approach to any problem or situation you want to share with your boss. Also prepare yourself to show that you have already thought about the particular situation you have shared and suggest some possible solutions.

Be it good or bad, you would never want your colleagues to listen, so ensure you talk to your boss in private. It's always good to have a one-to-one conversation so that both of you can put forward your suggestions and queries. Privacy ensures the honesty in talks and it also prevents confidential matters being overheard by others. Be professional in your acts by seeking an appointment to arrange proper and adequate time to speak to your boss.

Be straight forward while putting up your inputs to your boss. Go straight to the matter, be direct. Make sure you know what you are going to suggest. Put your points in a clear manner, present your grievances in straight language, and convey your suggestions clear, plain and lucid to your boss. This will make the meeting short, crisp, and concise.

Lastly, your feedback should be on the happenings in your organization and the possible solutions for the situations, not what you would like to do as the boss. It should be presented as your observations to help your boss be aware of how he is being perceived by others. You should also know your limitations while giving feedbacks to your boss as your understanding of his performance may be partial. Ultimately, the whole point of your feedback should be based on how you can help your boss improve

Musharraf says Osama raid was technically an act of war
Washington: The US raid to take out Osama bin Laden was technically 'an act of war', said former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf, who described as 'arrogance' US President Barack Obama's statement that he would order another raid if required.

Osama was gunned down May 2 by US commandos who stormed the Al Qaeda leader's hideout in Pakistan's Abbottabad city. The US said it had carried out a unilateral assault.
Musharraf told CNN: 'No country has a right to intrude into any other country.'
'Actually, technically, legally, you see it, it's an act of war. So I think it is an irresponsible statement, and I think such arrogance should not be shown, publicly, to the world.'
Explaining the 'act of war', Musharraf, who ruled Pakistan for nine years after seizing power in a bloodless coup in 1999, said: 'Theoretically, technically, yes indeed, it's an act of war.'

He, however, added it wouldn't necessarily signal a war.
'How to deal with it is the question, and I leave it to the government there to how they want to deal with it.'
Obama has said he would order another raid like the one which killed Osama if Islamabad did not act on threats developing in the country towards the US or its allies.
Soon after Osama was killed deep inside Pakistan, Musharraf had admitted that he was embarrassed.
Musharraf had said that the Pakistan Army and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) could not be blamed for the 'slip-up' that saw Osama residing in Abbottabad.
'Yes, I was embarrassed,' said Musharraf.

ITBP sends Rs 11 cr bill for Kasab''s security; Maha

A staggering Rs 11 crores has been spent on guarding 26/11 terror convict Ajmal Kasab and the security force protecting him wants it back.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) force has slapped a bill of Rs 10.87 crore on Maharashtra Government for guarding Kasab at the Arthur Road jail and sought its reimbursement which has stunned the state.

R K Bhatia, Director General of ITBP, whose 200 commandos provide 24-hour security to Kasab, has raised the bill received for reimbursement of expenses incurred between March 28, 2009 and September 30,2010.

Medha Gadgil, Maharashtra''s Principal Home Secretary, told PTI that the state government will be writing to the ITBP explaining their position that it was not just state government''s burden.

"We are in the process of writing to them. We will explain that 26/11 terror attacks is not only an issue limited to Maharashtra but a national issue," she said.

"What Kasab and his associates did is an attack not only on Mumbai but an attack on India and it is unfair to ask the state government to bear the burden (for ITBP guarding Kasab)," another senior Home department official said.

 2G scam probe: Kanimozhi denied bail, Arrested

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Friday denied bail pleas of DMK MP Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV chief Sharad Kumar, named as co-conspirators in the 2G spectrum scam.

The court directed the CBI to take her and Kalaignar TV Managing Director Sharath Kumar into judicial custody.  The Rajya Sabha MP will be taken to Tihar jail. The CBI had named Kanimozhi, daughter of DMK chief M. Karunanidhi, and Sharad Kumar as co-conspirators in its April 25 supplementary charge sheet after it traced an illegal money trail of  

Rs.214 crore in the scam.

Even before the long awaited sporting bonanza could see the day of light, the grand event was soaked in the allegations of corruption. It is estimated that out of Rs. 70000 crore spent on the Games, only half the said amount was spent on Indian sportspersons.
The Central Vigilance Commission, involved in probing the alleged corruption in various Commonwealth Games-related projects, has found discrepancies in tenders – like payment to non-existent parties, will-ful delays in execution of contracts, over-inflated price and bungling in purchase of equipment through tendering – and misappropriation of funds.


 3) Telgi Scam
As they say, every scam must have something unique in it to make money out of it in an unscrupulous manner- and Telgi scam had all the suspense and drama that the scandal needed to thrive and be busted.
Abdul Karim Telgi had mastered the art of forgery in printing duplicate stamp papers and sold them to banks and other institutions. The tentacles of the fake stamp and stamp paper case had penetrated 12 states and was estimated at a whooping Rs. 20000 crore plus. The Telgi clearly had a lot of support from government departments that were responsible for the production and sale of high security stamps.

4) Satyam Scam

The scam at Satyam Computer Services is something that will shatter the peace and tranquillity of Indian investors and shareholder community beyond repair. Satyam is the biggest fraud in the corporate history to the tune of Rs. 14000 crore.
The company’s disgraced former chairman Ramalinga Raju kept everyone in the dark for a decade by fudging the books of accounts for several years and inflating revenues and profit figures of Satyam. Finally, the company was taken over by the Tech Mahindra which has done wonderfully well to revive the brand Satyam.


5) Bofors Scam

The Bofors scandal is known as the hallmark of Indian corruption. The Bofors scam was a major corruption scandal in India in the 1980s; when the then PM Rajiv Gandhi and several others including a powerful NRI family named the Hindujas, were accused of receiving kickbacks from Bofors AB for winning a bid to supply India’s 155 mm field howitzer.
The Swedish State Radio had broadcast a startling report about an undercover operation carried out by Bofors, Sweden’s biggest arms manufacturer, whereby $16 million were allegedly paid to members of PM Rajiv Gandhi’s Congress.

In this corruption scandal worth Rs.900 crore, an unholy nexus was traced involved in fabrication of “vast herds of fictitious livestock” for which fodder, medicine and animal husbandry equipment was supposedly procured.

7) The Hawala Scandal

The Hawala case to the tune of $18 million bribery scandal, which came in the open in 1996, involved payments allegedly received by country’s leading politicians through hawala brokers. From the list of those accused also included Lal Krishna Advani who was then the Leader of Opposition.
Thus, for the first time in Indian politics, it gave a feeling of open loot all around the public, involving all the major political players being accused of having accepted bribes and also alleged connections about payments being channelled to Hizbul Mujahideen militants in Kashmir.

8) IPL Scam

Well, I am running out of time and space over here. The list of scandals in India is just not ending and becoming grave by every decade. Most of us are aware about the recent scam in IPL and embezzlement with respect to bidding for various franchisees. The scandal already claimed the portfolios of two big-wigs in the form of Shashi Tharoor and former IPL chief Lalit Modi.

9,10) Harshad Mehta & Ketan Parekh Stock Market Scam

Although not corruption scams, these have affected many people. There is no way that the investor community could forget the unfortunate Rs. 4000 crore Harshad Mehta scam and over Rs. 1000 crore Ketan Parekh scam which eroded the shareholders wealth in form of big market jolt.

Corruption In India: A Billion Dollar Industry ?

It is a no brainer that Corruption In India is at its rampant best.There is not one section of the society that is spared from it.Corruption in the form of bribery takes the cake and given that it begins at the grass root level makes it even more difficult to monitor and control.The  Corruption and Bribery Report published at trak.in earlier , gives a detailed breakdown of the scale of the bribes and the reasons why bribes are given.
The striking though well known findings of the report points out that close to half the bribes are requested by the Government Officials both at the state and national level.The same government personnel who are entrusted with the development of the nation are filling their own pockets.No wonder then the nation’s politicians are the most corrupt lot.

However, it it was only for the petty money minded officials filling their own pockets, the enormity of the bribery might be restricted to a certain level.What if corruption takes the shape of a billion dollar behemoth.According to Management Guru C.K.Prahalad , the cost of corruption to the country might as well exceed Rs. 250,000 crores.
The total spending for the 2009 Lok Sabha elections is pegged at a whopping Rs. 10,000 crore.The breakup of this spending throws up some interesting insights too.
  • Rs 1,300 crore (Rs 13 billion) by the Election Commission
  • Rs 700 crore (Rs 7 billion) by the Centre and state governments
  • Rs 8,000 crore (Rs 80 billion) were spent by political parties and individual candidates
8000 crore spent by political parties and individual candidates ? Where do they get hold of this kind of money to spend. Again, it comes as a no brainer that it is hugely attributed to the Private Funding that political parties attract from big pocket industrialists.The reasons why private spending of this scale happens again is rather simple Favourtism.It is a well known fact that government support is crucial for industries small and large.One favourable swing in a huge tender or a favourable policy, and all the benefits can be reaped.


Rage Against The Media

Recently India witnessed two issues where the ethics and integrity of political journalism was called into question.

The first was the Radia tapes affair where a corporate Public Relations Officer (PRO) was witnessed speaking to Barkha Dutt, Vir Sanghvi and many other prominent editors of Indian media. The topic of discussion was DMK’s role in formation of the Congress led government in 2009. The Corporate PRO, representing Ratan Tata and Mukesh Ambani, seemed to be keen in pushing A Raja as the Telecom Minister of the Union Cabinet. Radia was promoting the prospects of some DMK personalities as well as the gas interests of one Ambani brother and the spectrum interests of the Tatas. What if the 2-G scam is related to it!

The second issue was when WikiLeaks published a series of unedited documents that have brought almost every major authority of this world into question. Much debate has ensued on the issues related to publishing unedited documents without prior permission and followups.

These issues are more than ethical. They are legal. Ethics take a backseat when the law comes into the picture. This is why both these issues are debated in courts. As a freelance writer who claims to be unbiased, I really don’t want to add another obvious comment here. Rather, I would like to take up a larger issue that has gone unnoticed – that of unbiased journalism.

Let us examine the roots of journalism. Consider a situation when a journalist is covering a riot. People are dying around him and he has a dilemma. He can drop his camera, jump in and save a few lives. But a real journalist will just cover the episode, however ironic it may sound. He will report the real situation. That is his job. However, he will strive towards a greater objective – that the masses get to know about what has happened so that such riots may stop altogether.

What I am getting at is, a journalist has to be unbiased in his reporting. He cannot take sides and make emotional choices, not even politically. Well, according to one of my favorite journalists, Swapan Dasgupta (da), a political journalist often has to do a trade off here. Let me elaborate:

Swapan da elaborates the importance of political ‘contacts’. Journalists rely on these ‘contacts’ for stories. Establishing these ‘contacts’ requires the building of long term relationships. The relationships, however, are based on understandings. The ’source’ may tell you everything that has transpired in a crucial, closed-door meeting. But if he tells you that you can’t write a word about it, you are obliged to respect his wishes. The price of violating the understanding is future exclusion. To survive in political journalism you can’t spit and run.

Very often political journalist develop cosy relationships with sources. This is the price journalists often pay for knowing the truth. These sources can end up as friends and these personal attachments potentially jeopardize journalistic independence.

I strongly believe that a journalist’s primary focus should be knowing and bringing out the truth. He should never lose sight of his motives. Personality or ideology driven journalism is still acceptable (and often interesting). But journalism driven by material favours is pure corruption.

Swapan da himself is considered close to the BJP. But I can not think of an incident when he has not criticized BJP when the need arose. However, the case with Barkha Dutt and Vir Sanghvi was different. Vir Sanghvi referred to congress as ‘we’. Barkha Dutt was never far behind in going gaga over everything congress did. She was even accused of sensationalizing the coverage of the Mumbai Terrorist Attacks. Her broadcasts were used by terrorist handlers in Pakistan to relay orders back to their team in Mumbai. The credibility of Ms. Dutt and Mr. Sanghvi was always in question. The day the media had to confront the crisis was long overdue. 

This day in Indian media was inevitable!

I see it as a success of my nation that we read of a controversy which is being driven by the media against the media. As the nation progresses, the rotten eggs will crack. The question of Outlook publishing unedited data is as elementary as that of Wikileaks, and debate will never cease on the matter. But the greater question on the impartiality and objectivity of the media needs to be answered as soon as  possible. The sooner we do that, the better it will be for us.

WikiLeaks cables “inspired” anti-corruption campaign in India

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has said the “tremendous” anti-corruption movement “building up” in India is a result of the publication of “cablegate” revelations by The Hindu in recent weeks.

Citing the campaign, led by Anna Hazare, as an example of the impact of WikiLeaks cables, he said what was happening in India was “something that has not happened since the time of Gandhi.”

Mr. Assange singled out The Hindu‘s coverage of the leaked U.S. diplomatic cables while speaking in a debate organised by the Frontline Club and New Statesman here on Saturday.

Stating that he could “speak for hours” about the reverberations sparked by the cables around the world, he noted: “Just yesterday [on Saturday], the Editor of The Hindu, the most respected paper in India, brought over 21 front pages from the past six weeks that were based on cablegate material. Indian Parliament walked out four times and there’s now a tremendous anti-corruption movement that has been building up in that country — something that has not happened since the time of Gandhi.”

Making a difference


Mr. Assange, making a rare public appearance, said the WikiLeaks cables were making a difference in ways that many Britons wouldn’t have heard about. And, then, he referred to the developments in India following The Hindu‘s reporting of WikiLeaks documents.

A 900-strong audience in the packed Kensington Town Hall in central London listened as Mr. Assange defended the need for anonymous whistle-blowing, arguing that it made the world a safer place. The “bloodbath” in Iraq could have been averted if someone had had the courage to speak up.

Dynamic feedback


Challenged over WikiLeaks’ own transparency, he said: “We are directly supported on a week-to-week basis by you. You vote with your wallets every week if you believe that our work is worthwhile or not. If you believe we have erred, you do not support us. If you believe we need to be protected in our work, you keep us strong. That dynamic feedback, I say, is more responsive than a government that is elected after sourcing money from big business every four years.”

Mr. Assange, who is fighting extradition to Sweden to face allegations of sexual assault, said whistle-blowing was essential in a democracy because “the only way we can know whether information is legitimately kept secret is when it is revealed.”

He also referred to the plight of U.S. marine Bradley Manning, now in prison over allegations of leaking thousands of classified American documents.
During the debate, “This house believes whistleblowers make the world a safer place,” Mr. Assange was challenged about his website’s source of funding and style of operation.
