Plastic Manufacturers opposes Plastic ban in the City ?
The GHMC’s proposed ban on use of plastic carry bags in the city from July 1 h?as run into trouble with the industries department boss writing to the municipal administration win to take up the matter with the corporation. The industries principal secretary, Mr. T.S.Appa Rao, wrote to Mr. B.Sam Bob in the municipal administration department that the GHMC ban was not supported by law.

In his letter dated June 17, Mr. Appa Rao, who is also commissioner for
industrial promotion, stated that government of India has banned plastic products that are less than 40 microns thick. There are no specific orders from the High Court on banning usage of plastic and the decision of GHMC to seize industries, penalise manufacturing units from July 1 is not appropriate nor is supported by law, he said.

The AP Plastic Manufacturers Association, Hyderabad, has promised to cooperate with the government and GHMC to create awareness among the general public to use bins for disposing of plastic waste and help in segregation, said Mr. Appa Rao who incidentally served as MAUD principal secretary before being transferred recently. Also, opposition for the ban is now coming from within the GHMC elected body. The Telugu Desam floor leader in GHMC, Mr. Singireddy Srinivas Reddy, has written a letter to the Chief Minister, Mr. N.Kiran Kumar Reddy stating the decision on ban was taken by the mayor and standing committee alone and that others’ opinions should also be taken.
